Krishna Das: Flow of Grace
by CD Review by Larry Holgerson
Many people go into trance at the sound of Krishna Das’ voice and his harmonium’s drone. They’ll love Flow of Grace as they’ve loved all his work. After all, he is responsible for legitimizing kirtan (Hindu devotional chanting) music to the western world and continues to do so. But it’s been a long time since One Track Heart (1996) when Triloka records took a chance on kirtan music. These days, a whole new upbeat form of kirtan has emerged which inspires us more in the direction of getting up and dancing than eyes-closed, lotus-positioned chant-and-sway kitan. KD sticks to his devotional style and Flow of Grace remains in that school of kirtan. The second CD is two versions of him speaking the ancient prayer “Hanuman Chalisa” in Hindi. It’s a good Kishna Das CD and — if you collect — get it. If you want a CD that is current in kirtan style, get Ty Burhoe’s Invocation (where Krishna Das leads a few songs) or Dave Stringer. Sorry KD, good, but not great.
