Yogini: The Power of Women in Yoga
By Janice Gates with a Foreword by Linda Sparrowe
by Review by Craig Shafer
Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, yet it has only been in the last century that women have risen to prominence as practitioners and teachers. Fortunately, yoga is now an essential part of the lives of thousands of yoginis — women who
practice yoga.
Yogini: The Power of Women in Yoga is a beautifully composed and illustrated (with photographs) tribute to many of the notable yoginis of our time. Author and yoga teacher, Janice Gates, has profiled 17 well-known female yoga teachers, revealing the influence of yoga on their lives, as well as their contribution to the evolution of yoga today.
The book highlights prominent yoginis Nischala Joy Devi, Sharon Gannon, Sarah Powers, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Shiva Rae, Donna Farhi, Anna Forrest and others. Poignant quotes abound, making this a warm, insightful and attractive book.
When I go to yoga classes there are always many more women than men on their mats. It seems only right that, thanks to Gates, yoginis are finding the voice to match their numbers.
